15 Hancock Road was the
first of two houses on this street -- #16 across the street is the
other -- designed by Royal Barry Wills and built by Maurice Dunlavy.
The first residents of
this house were a sister and brother, Elizabeth and Thomas Wilbor,
first listed in the Street List in 1927. Thomas' occupation is shown
as "rancher", which seems unusual for Brookline in the
1920s, but no further information is available.
The 1930 U.S. Census
listed the residents as: Elizabeth G. Wilbor, 75; Thomas Wilbor,
70 (brother); and a servant, Bertha Colburne, 54, born Canada. The
house was valued at $17,000. Thomas was last listed in the Street
List in 1932 and Elizabeth in 1935.
The next residents were
Winslow and Emily Crowell. Wislow Crowell was in the advertising
industry. They were listed at this address in the Street List from1936
to 1944. Harry and Ryah Goodman were next, first listed in 1945.
Both were born in Russia. Harry, an accountant (born c1902), emigrated
in 1908 and Ryah (1905-2002) in 1914.
