Building contractor John
Kickham (c1880-1941) designed and built this house at the corner
of Washington and Greenough Streets for himself, his sister Agnes,
and his brother Edward. The site was part of the Wild
House property until it was acquired by the Blakes in the 1880s.
Edward Kickham, a physician,
was senior obstetrician and gynecologist at Carney Hospital (from
1924) and St. Elizabeth's Hospital (from 1930.) He was also an instructor
in gynecology at Tufts Medical School. He lived in this house with
his brother and sister for a few years -- listed in the Brookline
street list at this address from 1927 to 1932 -- before moving across
Greenough Street to 432 Washington Street. Edward died in 1944.
(New York Times obituary 8/12/44.)
The 1930 U.S. Census
listed the residents as: John E. Kickham, 50, building contractor;
Agnes E. Kickham, 45; and Edward L. Kickham, 34, physician. The
house was valued at $12,000.
In 1942, after John's
death, Alice Kickham was joined by Elizabeth M. Kelly, 74, and Ellen
G. Kelly, 76. These may have been aunts of the Kickhams. (Their
mother's maiden name was Kelly.) Members of the Kickham family continued
to live in the house until 1976 or 1977.
